7 Things Families Forget to Pack for Summer Road Trips

7 Things Families Forget to Pack for Summer Road Trips Summer road trip season is finally here. Families are loading up SUVs, planning vacations, heading to campgrounds, visiting relatives, and making memories on the road. But even well-planned trips can quickly become stressful when important items get forgotten. Whether you are heading across Iowa for a weekend getaway or taking a longer family vacation, a little preparation can make the drive much smoother and far more enjoyable. If you're still looking for the right road trip vehicle, you can browse available new SUVs here, compare used SUVs here, or check out our guide on the Best SUVs for Summer Road Trips in 2026. Brad Deery Motors is proud to be recognized as a 2025 CARFAX Top-Rated Dealer, based on verified customer reviews and ratings. Combined with strong Google reviews from drivers across Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin, many families choose Brad Deery Motors because they feel comfortable and confident throughout the shopping process. 1. Phone Chargers and Portable Battery Packs One of the most common things families forget is backup charging equipment. Phones, tablets, gaming devices, headphones, and navigation apps drain batteries quickly during long drives. Having extra charging cables and portable battery packs can save a lot of frustration, especially during long stretches between stops. 2. Snacks and Water It sounds simple, but snacks and drinks can completely change how smooth a road trip feels. Unexpected traffic, road construction, or long stretches without gas stations can make everyone uncomfortable fast. Keeping bottled water, easy snacks, and small coolers in the vehicle helps keep everyone happier during the drive. 3. Emergency Supplies Most families do not think about emergency supplies until they actually need them. While roadside issues are rare, being prepared gives peace of mind. Helpful items to keep in the vehicle include: Flashlight Jumper cables Blankets Basic tools Tire pressure gauge Emergency contact information 4. A Basic First Aid Kit Small cuts, headaches, bug bites, or upset stomachs can happen anytime during travel. A small first aid kit is easy to forget but can make a big difference when you need it. Even a simple kit with bandages, pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, and allergy medicine can be incredibly helpful during long trips. 5. Entertainment for Kids Long drives feel even longer when kids get bored. Downloaded movies, books, travel games, headphones, and coloring supplies are often forgotten during the rush to leave. Having entertainment ready before the trip starts can help make the drive far less stressful for parents and much more enjoyable for kids. 6. A Quick Vehicle Check Before Leaving Many people spend so much time packing that they forget to check the vehicle itself before hitting the road. Summer heat and long highway drives can put extra stress on your vehicle. Before leaving, it is smart to check: Tire pressure and tread Oil levels Brake condition Battery health Coolant levels Air conditioning performance You can schedule service here: Schedule Service. 7. Enough Cargo Space Many families realize too late that they simply ran out of room. Between luggage, coolers, camping gear, sports equipment, and passengers, cargo space matters more than expected during road trips. That is one reason SUVs remain so popular for family travel. They offer flexible seating, extra storage, and a more comfortable ride for long-distance driving. You can browse available new SUVs and used SUVs to compare road trip-ready options. Why the Right Vehicle Makes Summer Travel Easier Comfort, technology, passenger space, and cargo flexibility all play a major role during long drives. Families often discover that the right vehicle makes vacations less stressful and far more enjoyable. At Brad Deery Motors, we help families compare SUVs and travel-ready vehicles every day so they can find the right fit for their lifestyle, budget, and summer plans. Should You Buy New or Used in 2026? Pros & Cons Explained

If you're shopping for a vehicle in 2026, one of the biggest questions is whether buying new or used makes more sense. The answer depends on your budget, driving habits, financing goals, and what matters most to you long term. For some drivers, a brand-new vehicle with the latest technology and warranty coverage is the perfect fit. For others, a used vehicle offers more value and flexibility. At Brad Deery Motors, we help drivers compare both options every day. Whether you're considering a brand-new truck, SUV, or car or looking for a dependable used vehicle, understanding the pros and cons of each can help you make a smarter decision. You can browse available new inventory here or compare used vehicles here to see what fits your needs and budget. Brad Deery Motors is also proud to be recognized as a 2025 CARFAX Top-Rated Dealer, an award based on verified customer ratings and reviews. Combined with strong Google review feedback from customers across Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin, that recognition reinforces the trust shoppers place in our dealership. :contentReference{index=0} What Are the Benefits of Buying a New Vehicle in 2026? Buying new gives drivers access to the latest technology, updated safety systems, and full factory warranty coverage. Many shoppers also enjoy knowing they are the first owner of the vehicle, with no previous wear, mileage, or ownership history. New vehicles in 2026 also continue to offer advanced driver-assist systems, larger infotainment screens, smartphone integration, and more efficient powertrain options than ever before. Depending on incentives and financing programs, some new vehicles may also offer surprisingly competitive monthly payments. If you're shopping for trucks or SUVs, you can compare brands and models here: New Chevrolet Vehicles New RAM Trucks New Jeep Vehicles New Ford Vehicles What Are the Advantages of Buying Used? Used vehicles continue to be one of the best ways to maximize value. In many cases, buyers can afford more features, higher trim levels, or larger vehicles at a lower overall price point compared to buying new. Used vehicles also tend to experience less depreciation than new vehicles, which can make them appealing for budget-conscious shoppers. Depending on inventory, buyers may find low-mileage vehicles with modern technology, advanced safety features, and excellent everyday practicality. Shoppers looking for added confidence can also compare certified pre-owned vehicles or review available vehicle history information before making a decision. Is Financing Different for New vs Used Vehicles? Financing can vary depending on whether you buy new or used. New vehicles sometimes qualify for manufacturer-backed financing specials, lower interest rates, or special lease offers. Used vehicles may have slightly different loan structures, but they often provide lower overall purchase prices. The best option depends on your budget and long-term goals. Some buyers focus on lower monthly payments, while others prioritize long-term value or warranty coverage. You can learn more about financing here: Finance Center What's My Buying Power? Protect Your Investment Should You Trade In Your Current Vehicle? Trading in your current vehicle can help reduce the amount you need to finance and simplify the overall process. Many buyers use their trade-in value toward a down payment on either a new or used vehicle. If you're considering trading in your current vehicle, you can start here: Value Your Trade. What Makes More Sense for Iowa Drivers? For many Iowa drivers, the right decision comes down to how the vehicle will actually be used. Drivers who spend a lot of time commuting may prioritize fuel economy and warranty coverage, while families may focus more on space and practicality. Truck buyers often compare towing capability, winter driving confidence, and long-term durability. That is why comparing vehicles in person can make such a big difference. Seeing the size, comfort, technology, and features side by side often helps buyers narrow down their options much faster. Why Do Drivers Choose Brad Deery Motors? Buying a vehicle is a big decision, and drivers want a dealership they can trust. Brad Deery Motors has built a strong reputation through customer feedback, transparent communication, and a more relaxed shopping experience. Recognition as a 2025 CARFAX Top-Rated Dealer highlights that commitment to customer satisfaction and trust. Use your refund to get a new vehicle

Use Your Tax Refund to Upgrade Your Car

Use Your Tax Refund to Upgrade Your Car This Spring If you’re getting a tax refund this year, you’ve got a smart opportunity sitting right in your pocket. One of the best ways to use that refund is either upgrading to a newer vehicle or investing in important maintenance to keep your current car running strong into spring and summer. Most people don’t plan ahead for how to use their refund — they just let it disappear. But putting that money toward your vehicle can give you long-term value, better reliability, and more peace of mind. Let’s break down your best options. Why Is a Tax Refund a Smart Way to Upgrade Your Car? Using your tax refund as a down payment can make upgrading your vehicle much easier than you think. When you apply your refund toward a newer car: You lower the amount you need to finance You can reduce your monthly payment You may qualify for better loan terms You can move into something newer, safer, and more reliable For many buyers, a tax refund is the difference between thinking about upgrading and actually driving something better. Have a monthly payment in mind? Check your buying power to find out what vehicles fit in your budget. How Does Using a Tax Refund as a Down Payment Help? A down payment instantly puts you in a stronger buying position. Here’s how your refund works for you: Reduces loan balance → less interest paid over time Improves approval odds → helpful if credit is tight Unlocks newer options → move up in year, mileage, or features Keeps cash in your pocket → lower monthly commitment Even a modest refund can go a long way when paired with today’s inventory options. What Vehicles Make the Most Sense to Upgrade Into? Spring is a great time to upgrade because inventory is fresh and buyers are looking for practical, everyday value. Popular upgrade choices include: Newer sedans with better fuel efficiency SUVs with updated safety tech and more space Trucks with improved towing, comfort, and reliability Certified or late-model used vehicles with warranty coverage If your current vehicle is starting to feel outdated or unreliable, your refund can be the push that gets you into something that better fits your lifestyle. Financing & Credit FAQs Can I use my tax refund as a down payment if my credit is not perfect? Yes. A tax refund can strengthen your deal even if your credit isn’t perfect. Using your refund as a down payment may improve approval chances, lower the amount financed, and help secure better loan terms. Will a down payment from my tax refund help me get approved for a car loan? In many cases, yes. A larger down payment reduces lender risk and can help buyers qualify for financing who may otherwise be on the edge of approval. Can I finance a vehicle before my tax refund arrives? Yes. You can start the financing process before receiving your tax refund. Once your refund arrives, it can often be applied as a down payment or used to reduce your loan balance. Does using a tax refund lower my monthly car payment? Yes. Applying your tax refund as a down payment lowers the total amount financed, which often results in a lower monthly payment and less interest paid over the life of the loan. Can I get pre-approved for financing online? Yes. You can securely apply for financing online and see your buying power before visiting the dealership. Apply online here: https://www.braddeery.com/preapproved.aspx Will applying online affect my credit score? Online credit applications are commonly used to match you with lending options. Our finance team is happy to explain how the process works and help you understand any potential impact before moving forward. Not-So-Perfect Credit? You Still Have Options. Worried about credit? You’re not alone — and you’re definitely not out of options. At Brad Deery Motors, our finance team works with multiple lenders and helps customers every day who have: Less-than-perfect credit Limited credit history Recent life changes or setbacks Adding a tax refund as a down payment can make a real difference, and we’re here to walk you through your options in a no-pressure, judgment-free way. The goal is simple: help you understand your buying power and find a solution that works for your budget. Should You Use Your Tax Refund for Vehicle Maintenance Instead? If you’re planning to keep your current vehicle, using your refund for preventative maintenance is always a smart move — especially heading into spring and summer. What Maintenance Is Worth Spending Your Refund On? Some of the most valuable services include: New tires Winter wear adds up fast, and fresh tires improve safety, handling, and fuel efficiency. Brake service Worn brakes don’t just squeak — they affect stopping distance and overall safety. Air conditioning service or recharge No one wants to find out their AC doesn’t work on the first 90-degree day. Spring inspection Catching small issues early helps prevent expensive repairs later. Investing in maintenance now can extend the life of your vehicle and help avoid unexpected breakdowns during road-trip season. How Do You Decide: Upgrade or Maintain? Here’s a simple way to think about it: Upgrading may make sense if: Your vehicle needs frequent repairs You’re nearing major maintenance milestones You want newer safety features or better fuel economy You’re ready for a change Maintenance may be the better move if: Your vehicle is paid off and reliable Repairs are minor and predictable You want to avoid monthly payments You plan to keep it long-term Either way, your tax refund is doing real work for you — not just disappearing on everyday expenses. Make Your Tax Refund Work Smarter at Brad Deery Motors Whether you’re ready to upgrade your vehicle or want to protect the one you already own, your tax refund gives you options. At Brad Deery Motors, we can: Help you use your refund as a down payment Show you new and used vehicles that fit your budget Evaluate whether upgrading or maintaining makes more sense Get your car ready for spring and summer driving A tax refund doesn’t have to be a short-term win.
