Dubuque is the county seat of Dubuque County, which is located along the Mississippi River. The History of Dubuque

The city gets its name from Julien Dubuque who was a Quebecois pioneer that settled in the 1785. The area was rich in lead deposits, and Dubuque mined those during a period when control over the area would shift between different groups, including the Spanish and French. As for the United States, the city would be officially charted in 1883, designated as part of the Iowa Territory in 1838 and, finally, included in the State of Iowa when it was officially created in 1846. By this point, the lead was not so abundant anymore, but the timber was, and the city would thrive as it supported other local industries, including boat builders, breweries and, eventually, the railroads.
